ETC Group
ANNOUNCEMENT

ETC Group has posted two new job opportunities.

ETC Group, a non-profit international advocacy CSO, will hire a full-time English-language editor and a full-time programme manager to begin work in or around October 2008. Applications will be accepted until June 6, 2008. Details on the positions and the application process are available on our web site (and see below):

Programme Manager: http://www.etcgroup.org/.
Editor: http://www.etcgroup.org/.

For three decades, ETC Group has been an international civil society leader in researching, writing, and advocating on issues of concern to marginalized peoples primarily in the global South. Our work is divided between food, agriculture and biodiversity concerns - and includes the socio-economic impact of new technologies such as nanotechnology, genomics, and synthetic biology. We look at issues from a human rights perspective but also address global governance and corporate concentration issues. Our small staff of eight full-time people is spread out between our headquarters in Ottawa, Canada (three staff and a part-time accountant); Carrboro, North Carolina (two staff with part-time administrative support); Mexico City (two staff); and one programme manager in Montréal.

ETC was the first international CSO to address the ownership and control of plant genetic resources; biotechnology; Farmers' Rights and biopiracy; Terminator seeds; nanotechnology; synthetic biology; geoengineering; and technological convergence.  Our successful advocacy includes the defeat of several patents on the cell lines of indigenous peoples; other biopiracy claims against crop and medicinal plants; a UN moratorium on Terminator seeds; and the defeat of broad Monsanto and Syngenta patents. Most recently, we have campaigned for a moratorium on "ocean fertilization."  We work closely with many CSO partners (in the global South and North) and have observer status with a number of UN agencies including FAO, the UN Biodiversity Convention, and with institutions such as CGIAR.

All positions with ETC Group begin with a one-year mutual probation period.  Following that year and subject to adequate funding, new positions become permanent. All applications will be treated as confidential and references will not be pursued without the express permission of the applicant.

ETC Group is a staff-led organization governed by an international Board of Trustees that assures our fiscal responsibility and programme quality. Our financial situation is reasonably stable with long-standing and multi-year core support from governments and foundations on both sides of the Atlantic.

The position of Programme Manager:

There are no academic prerequisites for the position of Programme Manager. However, a strong capacity for careful research, creative writing, and an enthusiasm for international advocacy is essential. ETC staff members do not specialize. Each programme manager is expected to work on - and speak to - our full issue range from agricultural biodiversity to nanotechnology. While ETC is sensitive to family and personal needs, the position can involve significant international travel. The new programme manager can, in theory, work from any location offering broadband Internet access and good travel connections. ETC will not normally move a successful applicant unless it is clearly to the organization's benefit to have a presence in a specific location. Salaries are competitive with national CSOs in the applicant's country of residence. ETC's benefits package is generous.

The position of Editor:

Applicants for the Editor position should carefully review ETC's communiqués, news releases, and other publications. ETC has a provocative writing style that will be a challenge for any editor. Although ETC publishes in English and Spanish (and wishes to publish more in French), we are seeking an English-language editor. Facility in Spanish or French is an obvious advantage but not a requirement. Our preference is to have an editor based in North America (in our Carrboro, North Carolina office [Durham/Chapel Hill/Raleigh area], Montréal or Ottawa, Canada) and we will consider moving a successful candidate to one of these locations.  As with the programme manager, the editor's salary will be competitive with national standards in the applicant's country of residence.

Applications for the two positions will be accepted until the end of day in Ottawa June 6, 2008. To apply for either position, please refer to PDFs posted on our web site:

Applicants who have not heard from ETC before August 1, 2008 should assume that an interview will not be requested. We hope to complete the interview and selection process by early September and will hire as immediately as possible. ETC's working language is English but competency in additional languages - especially Spanish or French - is a definite advantage for both positions.
