Nnimmo is an architect/ environmental justice advocate. He is the Executive Director of the Health Of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF)-an  environmental/ ecological  justice think tank. He is also the coordinator of Oilwatch International.  

He co-founded the Environmental Rights Action (ERA) in 1993 in response to widespread environmental degradation and human rights abuses associated with activities of both public and private entities in Nigeria. He served as the Executive Director of Environmental Rights Action/ Friends of the Earth Nigeria, 1993-2013, and Chair of Friends of the Earth International 2008-2012.

 Besides being  HOMEF’s Executive Director, Bassey campaigns actively on oil industry issues and food/hunger politics. He has authored books on the environment, architecture/management and poetry. His latest poetry collection includes Patriots and Cockroaches (1992) We Thought It Was Oil, But It Was Blood  (2002), I Will Not Dance to Your Beat (2011), His latest book is To Cook A Continent  (2012) –Destructive Extraction and the Climate Crisis in Nigeria, published by pambazuka press

Bassey was listed as one of Time magazine’s Heroes of the Environment in 2009 and was co-recipients of 2010 Right Livelihood Award also known as the “Alternative Noble Prize.” In 2012 he received the Rafto Human rights Award. The 2012 Rafto Prize was awarded to Nnimmo Bassey in recognition of his long-term fight for people's rights to life, health, food and water in a world affected by climate change and mass environmental destruction according to the Rafto Foundation “Through his rights based work and criticism of prevailing systems, Bassey has shown how human rights can help mitigate the effects of these changes.”
