Communication is at the heart of our work. We have been producing and disseminating vital research for decades and are well-known and respected by policymakers and civil society allies. We want to improve our communications so that our research is published more frequently and is understood more easily by audiences old and new.
As part of this we are looking for someone to help craft our written communications in English, from helping to draft rigorous academic research reports through to laser-focused op-eds and press releases and engaging and creative content for our website, social media, audiovisual and other popular communications.
Our bold communications are designed to resonate in different regions, cultures and languages (including English and Spanish), so you will also need to have a flair for teamwork, collaborating with colleagues working in other languages and on a wide range of creative communications projects.
We are looking forward to welcoming an enthusiastic, inventive and organized team member to our small but globally dispersed crew.
Key communications responsibilities:
Under the guidance of ETC Group’s Communications Coordinator you will be responsible for the following tasks:
• Anchoring our English-language report writing. This will include working closely with researchers to transform their findings into pithy well-structured prose; and drafting organizational content including annual reports and reports to funders.
• Contributing as needed to the coordinated publication of reports and/or report summaries in Spanish and other languages, in conjunction with programme staff, translators and regional comms support staff.
• Preparing Report Communications Packs to accompany our research reports (containing summaries, workshop questions, PowerPoint presentations, etc) to be adapted for use in different regions.
• Enhancing our global communications by regular production of op eds, media releases, website copy, blogs, info sheets, newsletters and written content for social media, all of which can also be adapted for regional use.
• Helping to prepare written scripts for podcasts, community radio and animations.
• Collaborating with a range of copy editors, proofreaders and translators to ensure timely publication of all our written materials.
• Collaborating with other staff, consultants and freelancers, including our regional communications support people, to ensure our capacity to create and implement ETC’s communications goals, including:
- delivery of webinars and other online communications events
- helping to manage and maintain ETC’s various websites, domains, and social media channels and
- organization of communications lists, files and materials.
• Coordination of the Communications Team and activities, including our regional communications support people and activities, when the Communications Coordinator is absent.
Who we are looking for:
We are searching for a new team member who has a passion for the written word and is fluent in English. This role requires considerable linguistic versatility, and you will need to be able to demonstrate strong academic and creative writing skills, as well as an ability to communicate about technology. We welcome early career applicants if you can show us your potential.
It’s also vital that you are politically aligned with ETC’s mission and vision and are able to work with sensitivity and humour in an intercultural not-for-profit environment. Previous experience of this type of work would be helpful, as would the capacity to work in Spanish and/or other languages.
Our communications calendar is packed throughout the year! You will need to have strong project management skills, including the ability to work to tight deadlines, an enthusiasm for collaborative projects and team work, and the ability to use relevant software tools.
We also aim for bold and creative communications with an increasing emphasis on audiovisuals. We would appreciate a new team member who shares our enthusiasm for creativity and experimentation, and visual design skills would be an extra plus point.
This is a remote work-from-home job. You could be based anywhere in the world, but you will need to be available to participate in staff and other meetings (often held between the hours of 9 and 12 EST) on a regular basis; and you must have access to strong and reliable internet and a comfortable home working environment. Occasional international travel will be required.
You will be managed by the Communications Coordinator and participate in ETC’s Communications Team which involves communications and programme staff.
